A New Beginning

Sewing Table by Heidi Staples of Fabric Mutt

It seemed appropriate to finish off the Busy Girl Sews Tour with a look at how I'm setting up my new sewing room in Texas. There's a part of me that wanted to wait until every piece was in place, but I knew that would mean holding off on showing you the room until some time this fall. I'm working slowly through everything, trying to take my time and really organize things instead of just stuffing them in baskets and cupboards. It's time consuming yet so worth it to do things this way. I'll spare you the photo of my unsorted fabrics, notions, and tools, but believe me when I say that there's quite a bit left to be organized before I'm through.

My new sewing space is, quite frankly, a dream come true. Our house has an enormous loft at the end of the upstairs hallway which is large enough to hold my husband's office, our home gym, playtime and library areas for the girls, and a sewing area that is at least twice the size of what I had in California. It gives me plenty of room to spread out as well as add a few new areas to my studio that make it even more friendly.

I'm probably most excited about my new cutting station. Being rather tall (almost 5'11"), it's been a painful thing to lean over my sewing desk and cut fabric over the past few years. The first thing I did after arriving in Texas was purchase a high square pub table from Amazon which is the perfect height for me to work without straining my back. I added an adjustable stool from Target so that I can sit at the desk too whenever I want. Bonus tip: most tabletop desk organizer units are absolutely perfect for storing your cutting tools. I've had this one for months, and I'm absolutely crazy about it!

The area that used to hold my cutting mat will now be my pressing station, and it will be so convenient to sew and press seams at opposite sides of the L-shaped desk that used to belong to my dad. I still have all my tools lined up along the edge in glass and wooden containers as you can see in the picture at the top of this post. Did I mention that this is part of the view outside my sewing room window? I tell you, it's been hard to get any work done since I arrived. All I want to do is gaze out the windows all day long...

Right now I have at least half of my fabric folded and sorted. I decided to go back to my old system of storing linen and canvas prints in this black wire drawer unit, and larger scraps are still being kept in my wooden Melody Miller drawer unit above that. The big plastic tubs to the right are waiting to hold quilt backings and works in progress.

I'm still using my great grandfather's old cabinet to store fabric, and I put my wooden cubbies and my antique scale and typewriter back on display above that where I love to see them. Sometimes I think the non-sewing things we keep in our rooms are just as inspiring as the fabric!

I saw this linen storage bench at Target over the weekend and immediately knew that it belonged in my sewing space. Batting, interfacing, and pillow forms fit perfectly inside, and my sewing files and some inspirational design books are in the baskets to the left. This bench makes a great spot for me and the girls to curl up with a good book or get together for a little mother-daughter chat during the day.

My scrap tins are now lined up along a table that also used to belong to my great grandfather. Having them out on display instead of tucked inside a cupboard makes it so much easier for them to be used. The girls can stand next the table or sit on the storage bench while they sort scraps for me.

Just to the right of my sewing space is the new library that I've set up for my girls. I've long been wanting to create a special reading area for them, and this spot next to a big window couldn't be more perfect. The large book display works as a natural divider between my space and theirs. One side holds their picture books and the other side shows off a good portion of my sewing library.

My husband teases me that I said I was buying it just for the kids, but seriously, how could I resist?!

I can't tell you what it's meant to me to put together this sewing space over the past week. Somehow it's both a new beginning and like coming home. The crazy schedule with our move meant that I had to pack up most of my sewing room back at the beginning of May. I've gone for two months without sewing a stitch, and it was so hard to lose that part of myself. While it's good to know that I can still exist without my sewing, I can honestly say that sewing continues to make my life a happier one. And really, that was the whole point of my book after all.

May you have the happiest of weeks ahead of you, my friends.

Busy Girl Sews: Sew Can She

If you're looking for a sewing tutorial, look no further than Sew Can She, Caroline's brilliant website which has links to just about every free tutorial under the sun. Caroline is a talented pattern writer herself and is the co-author of Just for You, a wonderful book full of clothing and accessory projects. I have loved following her blog over the years and am delighted to have her on the Busy Girl Sews Tour this week. She's sharing her own organizational progress report as well as the adorable caterpillar pillow you see above. Stop by her blog to read more!

Next week I'll be wrapping up the book tour with a look at my new sewing room here in Texas and how I'm working to get myself organized again after our move. It's all in progress now, and I can't wait to share the (hopefully!) finished product with you next Monday!

Busy Girl Sews: Quilty Habit

AMH Mini Quilt by Heidi Staples of Fabric Mutt

Back in 2012, I was partnered up with Jess of Quilty Habit for the Modernista Swap, and it was the start of a beautiful friendship. She was (and still is) crazy about all things Anna Maria Horner, so I made her the mini quilt and basket you see above, featuring AMH prints and a block from Elizabeth Hartman's Modern Patchwork book. It was hard to let go of my Perspective quilt, but thankfully Jess lets me get a peek at it on Instagram once in a while when she shares a shot of all the cute mini quilts on her sewing room wall! She is such a talented quilter, and her enthusiasm is always an inspiration to me. Today you must head over to her blog to see the Flutter quilt she made, which was inspired by a beautiful Design Seeds color board. I love this little butterfly baby quilt, and Jess's version couldn't be sweeter. Go take a look!

Busy Girl Sews: Plum & June

While I am spending my first night in our new home in Texas, my dear friend Beth from Plum & June is carrying on the Busy Girl Sews book tour this week. Beth and I have known each other since we both started blogging, and I was so happy to have her be a part of my book. She created the Advice for New Bloggers Blog Hop, which has helped so many new sewing bloggers over the past few years including me. She also recently co-wrote The Modern Medallion Workbook with Janice Zeller Ryan, an inspiring book full of beautiful medallion quilt patterns. Stop by her blog to see Beth's start on a Dotty Hexagon Pillow using stunning little scraps of Liberty fabric!

For today's stop on the Busy Girl Sews Tour, head over to Bryan House Quilts where Becca will show you her sweet summer version of the Envelope Clutch Art Pack. Becca and I have been friends since I first started blogging, and she's a constant source of encouragement and inspiration for me. She sells her own quilt patterns, has written the gorgeous book Modern Rainbow, and is a new project designer for Sizzix -- this girl does it all! She has some great organization tips on her blog today too, so be sure to check it out!

Busy Girl Sews: Maureen Cracknell Handmade

Summer Tourist Blocks from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

I had dinner with one of my best friends tonight, an aspiring novelist. We enjoy getting together to talk about our personal lives, but we also love to discuss writing -- an interesting topic for us when we approach it from such different genres. Writing, like sewing, is an art form, and my friend and I agree that those who do it have to find their own balance between creativity and structure.

It's one of the things that I was most passionate about as I was writing Sew Organized for the Busy Girl. I wanted to give my readers a framework for discovering what works best for them as they look for that same balance in their sewing rooms. There's no magic bullet, no one perfect method that works for everybody. You have to know yourself and your situation well enough to create systems and habits that will be useful in the busy corner of the world that you're living in right now. Nothing has made me happier than to have people email me or tag me on Instagram to say that they're working through my book, that they're getting more organized, and that it's really helping them find time to sew. I am so thrilled to hear it, my friends!

This week's stop on the Busy Girl Sews Tour is Maureen Cracknell Handmade. I started following Maureen's blog before I even learned how to use a sewing machine, and I continue to be just as much in awe of her now as I was then. Maureen is both wonderfully sweet and artistically gifted. She has a never ending supply of gorgeous quilting designs -- all of which are showcased through her stunningly beautiful photography. You can purchase her darling felt creations (my daughters each have one of her personalized floral crowns) on Etsy, as well as buy her beautiful Wild & Free collection for Art Gallery Fabrics from any designer fabric shop. I could not admire her more and am so thrilled to have her on the tour as well as featured in my book. Be sure to stop by her blog for a peek!

Busy Girl Sews: Charm About You

Dotty Hexagon Pillow from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

I am absolutely giddy about Lucy's take on the Dotty Hexagon Pillow over at Charm About You this week! Instead of solids, she went with a mixture of unbelivably adorable prints, and if she lived any closer to me, I would be stopping by her house every week just to stare at it. Lucy was kind enough to share a few tips with us too about how she stays organized at her place, even in the midst of making the gorgeous patchwork projects that she sews each month. Is it any wonder why I love this girl? Be sure to stop by her blog today for a peek!

Busy Girl Sews: SOTAK Handmade

Heather Ross Deluxe Pincushion from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

As I explained in my last post, I rarely make the same pattern twice. That's why the Deluxe Pincushion from my book surprised me. I never tire of making these. The Heather Ross version above (which I sewed up in a mad dash on the night before heading to Quilt Market) is my latest and possibly favorite one yet. It reminds me very much of our new home in Texas which I can hardly wait to visit in just four weeks.

Svetlana of S.O.T.A.K Handmade is sharing her own pincushion this week, and I'm delighted that she's not only on my book tour but also one of the bloggers featured in my book. She has a design style that is so uniquely her own -- I can instantly recognize her hand in any project she makes. I'm honored to call her a friend as well as a fellow blogger. If you're not familiar with her work, go spend an afternoon scrolling through her beautiful blog posts as well as the fantastic patterns she has for sale. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

I'm hoping to have a post for you in the next few days to share impressions of my first Quilt Market. What an adventure! It's all still processing in my head, but I can't wait to share my thoughts with you. We'll talk soon...

Busy Girl Sews: Ellison Lane Quilts

Weekend Tourist Mini Quilt from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

The Weekend Tourist Mini Quilt is kind of like the Summer Tourist Quilt's little sister. There are times when you just don't want to wait; you've got to play with your scraps and have a finished project to show for it right now. I pulled out some of my treasured Heather Ross prints for this project, and oh, how I love it. A Tim Holtz newsprint fabric makes a great background, and I bound the quilt in a purple dot print by Violet Craft. It's enormously simple, but definitely one of my favorite projects from my book.

Jennifer is sharing her version of the Weekend Tourist over at Ellison Lane Quilts this week. I have so many "firsts" in my sewing career tied up with Jennifer and her blog. Her 2012 charm swap was the first fabric swap I ever joined, and her 2012 Modern Mini quilt competition was the first quilting contest I ever entered with my Retro Kitchen quilt -- you can see that old favorite right here. Jennifer is such an encouraging person, and she has come up with so many amazing ideas over the years for quilting events, both online and in person. Her Sew South Retreat is legendary, and one of these days, I hope to see it with my own eyes! Be sure to stop by her blog to see what cuteness she's done with the Weekend Tourist.

My husband spoiled me with hours of deliriously happy sewing over the weekend so that I could finish up a few projects for Quilt Market this week. I can't wait to show you what I made, so stay tuned!

Busy Girl Sews: Why Not Sew?

My prototype for the Nine Patch Pocket Pillow from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl was made a little over two years ago when I sewed up a last minute gift for a friend's daughter. You'll find three variations on the project in my book: the Deluxe Pincushion, the First Aid Station, and the Book Nook. I love that these projects are all based on the same pattern yet are so completely different from each other!

This week you can visit my dear friend Erin at Why Not Sew? to see her adorable version of the Book Nook. Erin specializes in some of the sweetest patchwork you'll find in the quilting community, and she has been an incredible blessing to me over the years with her sweet words of encouragement from one busy mom to another. She has a book of her own coming out later this year, and I can't wait to get a copy. Be sure to drop by and see the darling project she made for her girls!

Congrats to go_design & EmileeHope, my winners from last week's giveaway. I've emailed you both and look forward to getting some fabric in the mail to you tomorrow!

Have a wonderful week, my friends!

Busy Girl Sews: Fat Quarter Shop (and a Fabric Giveaway)

Envelope Clutch by Heidi Staples from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl

It occurs to me that you might like to know a little bit more about the projects themselves as well as the wonderful people who are presenting them each week during Busy Girl Sews, so I've given you a few more details below on the Envelope Clutch. Daniar will be sharing her version of the project over at the Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber blog tomorrow, a shop which really needs no introduction at all. Suffice it to say that if you want to buy great fabric from nice people, the Fat Quarter Shop is a good place to start. Not only do they have a staggering inventory of prints, but I love that they have always been so happy to supply prizes for sew alongs and blog hops over the years, no matter how small the bloggers are who host them. That kind of generosity does a lot to build good will in the community, and it shows. I was also thrilled to have Kimberly share some thoughts for a little interview in my book, so be sure to check that out if you have your own copy!

Envelope Clutch by Heidi Staples from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl

When I designed my projects for Sew Organized for the Busy Girl, I spent a lot of time doing research in different places, including the fashion industry. Envelope clutches have been fairly popular in recent years and for good reason: the simple shape is both modern and classic.

I provide two versions of the clutch in my book, a small one for manicure items and a large one for an artist's toolkit. When you look at the project, you can see that it's really a very simple sew, but I love how useful it is.

So as I type this post, I'm standing at 2,999 followers on Bloglovin' which is almost inconceivable to me. The fact that all of you care enough to drop by each week and see what I'm up to -- well, I just love you guys. Your kindness is such a blessing to me in this transition period full of empty walls, stacked boxes, little sleep, and what feels like an endless supply of chaos as we prepare to move in June. I looked at my ravaged sewing room last week and could only laugh since I feel like a prime candidate for my own book right now. I can hardly wait to be "sew organized" again once we get settled in Texas!

But meanwhile, friends, I want to share the love with all of you through some fabric care packages. Please leave a comment below telling me a few of your favorite designers, colors, and collections. I'll pick two names on Friday morning. International entries are welcome to join in. Feel free to dream big in your comments, and I'll see what I can do!

Busy Girl Sews: She Can Quilt

Brass Ring Pillow from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

I am so excited to send you over to Leanne at She Can Quilt for today's Busy Girl Sews post because, oh my word, that girl can quilt! Leanne is a master at modern quilting. Whether she's doing improv work, her own amazing pattern designs, or the simplest patchwork, she seems to turn everything she makes into a piece of textile art. I've known Leanne for years now, and she is truly just as thoughtful as she is gifted. I can't wait for you to see her version of the Brass Ring Pillow!

Thank you SO much to those of you who have left me sweet comments or sent me emails about how much you love Sew Organized for the Busy GirlWhat a blessing you are! And my deepest thanks to those of you who have left kind reviews at places like Amazon, which is both encouraging and incredibly helpful. You have no idea how much your words mean to me. I truly can't thank you enough!

Busy Girl Sews: Craft Buds & A Quilter's Table

Sleepy-Time Friend Kit from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

Today I'm so excited to bring you Busy Girl Sews posts from two of the most gracious women in the online quilting community.

I first discovered Lindsay of Craft Buds through the Craft Book Month blog hop, an annual celebration of books for makers everywhere. Lindsay has always been such a champion for community, inspiring people to sew and share together. I love her sweet spirit and creative projects, and her Modern Bee book has been an undeniable hit. Just wait till you see what she did with the Sleepy-Time Friend Kit!

From the moment I met Debbie of A Quilter's Table online, I was so touched by the way she was constantly cheering on everyone around her. She must leave hundreds of comments on sewing blogs each month, spreading encouragement around the globe. Debbie is an enormously talented modern quilter, and I never ceased to be amazed by her projects, my favorite so far being her stunning Unlocked quilt. Since she's also an avid foodie, Debbie chose to sew my Chevron Table Set for this tour -- such a perfect choice!

Enjoy, my friends!

Busy Girl Sews: Cut to Pieces & Tales of Cloth

Today I have two lovely stops for you to make on the Busy Girl Sews Tour!

I'm pretty sure that my first introduction to Angela of Cut to Pieces was her legendary Where Bluebirds Fly mini quilt. Angela has so much talent. Not only does she sew gorgeous projects of all kinds, but she's written A Quilter's Mixology, a fabulous book on sewing curves, and even done a little filming on the same topic. This is not a quilter to miss, people! Angela will be sharing her version of the Dotty Hexagon Pillow.

Long before she wrote Tales of Cloth, I met Jodi through her former blog name, Tickle & Hide. Jodi is a truly gifted quilter and an equally brilliant writer. I absolutely love reading her blog posts about family, faith, and sewing in the Australian countryside. Her friendship has been such a blessing to me over the years, and I'm so thrilled to have her as a part of this tour. Jodi is sharing a stunning version of the Starlet Mini Quilt.

Enjoy!

Busy Girl Sews Tour

Busy Girl Sews Tour for Sew Organized for the Busy Girl by Heidi Staples

Today is the first day of the Busy Girl Sews Tour, a chance for some of my friends to share their version of projects from my book. Rather than pack a lot into a short amount of time, I decided to make this a weekly tour. Every Monday you'll get a little dose of inspiration and maybe even a few organizing tips from some wonderfully talented sewing bloggers. We're kicking it off today at Lily's Quilts with the only giveaway of our tour. Lynne has three copies of the book to share with you, so be sure to leave a comment on her post!

I wouldn't be where I am today without Lynne. Her monthly Fresh Sewing Day blog link-up was the first one I ever joined back when Fabric Mutt was just over a month old, and that involvement changed the life of my blog and my entire sewing experience by introducing me to the encouragement of the online quilting community for the first time. She also gave me the chance to make a few projects for the Fat Quarterly e-magazine when I was very new to pattern writing, and I'm so grateful for those experiences now which trained me for later projects. On top of everything else, Lynne is an incredibly brilliant pattern designer, prolific author, and just plain lovely human being. If you haven't visited her blog before, you must stop by for a visit!

The tour schedule for the next few months is:

March 30 - Lynne of Lily's Quilts (Today's Tour Kickoff & Book Giveaway!)
April 6 - Jodi of Tales of Cloth & Angela of Cut to Pieces
April 13 - Lindsay of Craft Buds & Debbie of A Quilter's Table
April 20 - Leanne of She Can Quilt
April 27 - Fat Quarter Shop
May 4 - Erin of Why Not Sew?
May 11 - Jennifer of Ellison Lane Quilts
May 18 - Svetlana of SOTAK Handmade
May 25 - Lucy of Charm About You
June 1 - Maureen of Maureen Cracknell Handmade
June 8 - Becca of Bryan House Quilts
June 15 - Beth of Plum & June
June 22 - Jessica of Quilty Habit
June 29 - Caroline of Sew Can She
July 6 - Heidi of Fabric Mutt (Tour Wrap!)

Thank you so much for coming along on this tour with us!
