Resolved

Before I get started on anything else, the winner of my birthday giveaway for two yards of Charley Harper fabric from Fabricworm is (drum roll please)...Caryn. I've sent you an email, Caryn. Enjoy!

So today is the first day of 2014, and something feels different. Normally I would be drawing up a list of resolutions for the new year: lose weight, get organized, work on any unfinished projects, clean out the garage...funny how the list doesn't change much from year to year. About a week ago, though, I read a really great article in issue 34 of Mollie Makes called "Resolve to Be Happy." Incredibly talented blogger and designer Holly Becker of decor8 makes an excellent case for ditching the perfectionistic merry-go-round and choosing to enjoy the life you have right in front of you.

Her article struck a real chord with me, and after spending a few days mulling it over, I decided that the best resolution I can make this year is to live my life. I'm not talking about jumping out of a plane or running up my credit cards. I mean taking time to pay attention to my world instead of just watching it pass me by. It's one of the hazards of social media, I think, that we can spend so much time documenting life that we forget to live it. As I walk into 2014, I am resolved to take pictures with my mind as well as my camera, to work hard and play harder, to delight in the work of my hands and the people close to my heart.

And yes, I think there may be some sewing involved...

Happy New Year.

  1. I agree, Heidi! I wrote something similar on my post (esp. about "putting the phone down"). Here's to another great year! Can't wait to see what you cook up!

  3. exactly!! That has been my one thought for the year - to enjoy the life that God has given me, and to be more engaged with it. Social media is great.. but too much of it is not - and I think I didn't get the balance right in 2013.

  4. I agree! Previous resolutions were just lip service to the idea of resolving to do them. I don't make them anymore. And your musings on living life instead of documenting it resonate with me. I try not to photograph every event my children are involved in now, because I found I wasn't watching them. I was trying to get a good photo. That kinda misses the point of them being involved. Best wishes for 2014.

  5. Well said! It is surprising how much can get done even when there isn't a plan (THIS from the woman who is a recovering compulsive detailed list maker!!). Making memories is the best gift for you and those you love! All the best for 2014!

  6. Great resolution!! I feel sometimes we forget the people around us too - at least I have been known to get obsessed in sewing/quilting. I am hoping to find that balance this year and spend more time with them living :-)

  7. Amen! In that vein, I'm trying to not feel I need to take a picture everywhere we go - just be with my kids at an event, in nature, etc, and not need to document it. Hope you have a wonderful, well-lived 2014 : )
