Over the past year, I've been slowly building a Heather Ross stash. A small bundle here, a scrap pack there, the occasional splurge on Etsy for something out of print. I've used pieces in my projects as I've gone along (here, here, and here are prime examples), but I finally decided that it's time to make a Heather Ross quilt to hang on the wall in the big girls' room. It's incredibly daunting to cut into this fabric, some of which is so rare and all of which is gone forever if I make a mistake. I keep repeating Amanda Jean's motto to myself: it's all just fabric...right?
Since so many of my pieces are in odd shapes and sizes, I've decided to go far more improvisational than usual. It's a little ways out of my comfort zone, but I'm trying. Svetlana's gorgeous puzzle quilt from last year is up on my Pinterest board to remind me that randomness in design can have amazing results. This is my goal finish for the month of February, and I hope to have a quilt top to share with you in the next week or two. Now if I can just get the courage to pick up that rotary cutter...

ReplyDeleteAnd what do you mean it's "gone forever"? It doesn't disappear into ether if you cut it wrong. :) You'd just have to do something new with it, and I'm sure that you could! Still, measure twice, cut once. ;)
Ooh be brave! It'll be so fabulous to be able to have all that gorgeousness hanging on the wall!

ReplyDeleteWow - what a gorgeous collection. I think it's a great idea to make something to hang on the wall. Beautiful fabric is just wasted sitting in a drawer (says she who has all of her favourites safely stashed away never to be used?!)

ReplyDeleteI think many of us have a stash that's hard to cut into. Good for you for going for it! I have a piece of the tadpoles in jars with the peach colored background that you are more than welcome to have. It's an odd size but would work for improve piecing :)

ReplyDeleteYes!!! Good for you. I have also been collecting HR for quite a while now, and have the same fear of cutting into it. Knowing that I can buy lots of her prints on Spoonflower has made me closer to using it. Good luck, and I look forward to the result!

ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing collection! I find it's easier for me to cut treasured fabrics if I end up having a bit leftover. Probably says something about my hoarding tendencies...

I have some that I keep pulling out and petting and ooh-ing and aah-ing over just not able to cut into yet. I think it is a fabulous ideal what you are doing and you will make something totally unique and wonderful as always. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Have fun!
