Courage
Over the past year, I've been slowly building a Heather Ross stash. A small bundle here, a scrap pack there, the occasional splurge on Etsy for something out of print. I've used pieces in my projects as I've gone along (here, here, and here are prime examples), but I finally decided that it's time to make a Heather Ross quilt to hang on the wall in the big girls' room. It's incredibly daunting to cut into this fabric, some of which is so rare and all of which is gone forever if I make a mistake. I keep repeating Amanda Jean's motto to myself: it's all just fabric...right?
Since so many of my pieces are in odd shapes and sizes, I've decided to go far more improvisational than usual. It's a little ways out of my comfort zone, but I'm trying. Svetlana's gorgeous puzzle quilt from last year is up on my Pinterest board to remind me that randomness in design can have amazing results. This is my goal finish for the month of February, and I hope to have a quilt top to share with you in the next week or two. Now if I can just get the courage to pick up that rotary cutter...
Linking up to A Lovely Year of Finishes and Work In Progress Wednesday.
You have the fish! Woah...
ReplyDeleteAnd what do you mean it's "gone forever"? It doesn't disappear into ether if you cut it wrong. :) You'd just have to do something new with it, and I'm sure that you could! Still, measure twice, cut once. ;)
Ooh be brave! It'll be so fabulous to be able to have all that gorgeousness hanging on the wall!
ReplyDeleteBiting my nails for you . . . but really, it will be amazing, I know!
ReplyDeleteWow - what a gorgeous collection. I think it's a great idea to make something to hang on the wall. Beautiful fabric is just wasted sitting in a drawer (says she who has all of her favourites safely stashed away never to be used?!)
ReplyDeleteYes! Do it! It's only fabric! You'll enjoy it so much more made up into something to cuddle.
ReplyDeleteYou must be brave, and what a gorgeous selection, good luck! : )
ReplyDeleteOoooh a bit nauseous just looking at that loveliness all in one place ;) You will do it right though!
ReplyDeleteDrool! I cut into my good folks last year for a quilt and honestly, it is so lovely to work with your special fabrics rather than just hoarding them. You'll love the process!
ReplyDeleteOh look at all those lovely prints! So precious! Can't wait to see your progress - You will be great with it and have a lovely quilt forever!
ReplyDeleteWow - what a collection! I can't wait to see what you do with it - it's sure to be gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOh, how fun!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you come up with! I have a similar stash and am totally stumped about what to do with it all.
What a wonderful sight!! I bet it will be brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI think many of us have a stash that's hard to cut into. Good for you for going for it! I have a piece of the tadpoles in jars with the peach colored background that you are more than welcome to have. It's an odd size but would work for improve piecing :)
ReplyDeleteCute fabrics. Can't wait to see the quilt top
ReplyDeleteYes!!! Good for you. I have also been collecting HR for quite a while now, and have the same fear of cutting into it. Knowing that I can buy lots of her prints on Spoonflower has made me closer to using it. Good luck, and I look forward to the result!
ReplyDeleteI think you picked a wonderful quilt to cut those Heather Ross prints up for!
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Pretty fabric. I can't wait to see your finish:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely stack of fabrics! And the puzzle quilt is so interesting. It's going to be like an I spy quilt for grownups.
ReplyDeleteooh - can't wait to see what this becomes. I have a big stack of Heather Ross that I need to actually USE as well :)
ReplyDeletethat is a funny thing. Why does it take so much courage? I guess cuz we spend so much money getting those little scraps of Heather's. Good luck . . . plunge in!
ReplyDeleteGreat collection. Such cute fabrics.
ReplyDeleteCourage, indeed, it is going to be lovely!
ReplyDeleteDeep breath, pick up the rotary cutter and repeat after me, I can do this.... Can't wait to see what you come up with x
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of fabrics I am scared to use, including Heather Ross. :D That is a great collection! I wish I had been around when the fish and mermaids were readily available! Have fun!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing collection! I find it's easier for me to cut treasured fabrics if I end up having a bit leftover. Probably says something about my hoarding tendencies...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will look wonderful no matter what you do. With such great fabrics, how could it not? ;)
ReplyDeleteI purchase fabric all the time with no real purpose...You've just motivated me to create a collection from a favorite designer. What fun!
ReplyDeleteHeidi - you have aced every project you set your mind to. No need to doubt yourself. As Henry the Fifth said to his men "Once more to the bridge dear fellows".
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it is going to be beautiful. Every project you make is always beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I totally get how you feel about cutting into Heather Ross fabrics. I have some that I keep pulling out and petting and ooh-ing and aah-ing over just not able to cut into yet. I think it is a fabulous ideal what you are doing and you will make something totally unique and wonderful as always. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Have fun!
